Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan sits at the crossroads of Central Asia, a land where Islam has shaped culture, architecture, cuisine, and daily life for over a millennium. The country is famous for its Silk Road heritage, with majestic cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, and Tashkent.

Home to Islamic masterpieces-mosques, mausoleums, and ancient Qur’ans-Uzbekistan earned global acclaim in Muslim tourism, winning “Islamic Heritage Destination of the Year” and “Top Muslim-Friendly Emerging Destination” awards.

With a Muslim population of around 90-96%, Uzbekistan offers a deeply halal-friendly environment — halal food is widespread, mosques and prayer facilities are abundant, and many hotels and services now offer halal-certified or halal-aware options.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Uzbekistan is during spring (April–May) and autumn (September–early November), with the best balance of weather, food experiences, and cultural events.

What to See, Eat and Do ?

Samarkand

One of Central Asia’s oldest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a dazzling gem of the Silk Road. Once the capital of Timur’s empire, it became a global center of Islamic scholarship, art, and trade. Its crown jewel, Registan Square, with three magnificent madrasas, showcases breathtaking Islamic architecture.

Other highlights include the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, and the monumental Bibi-Khanum Mosque. Just outside the city lies the Imam Bukhari Mausoleum, a sacred pilgrimage site honoring one of Islam’s greatest hadith scholars. With its turquoise domes, intricate tilework, and spiritual heritage, Samarkand is both visually captivating and profoundly meaningful, offering travelers an unforgettable journey into Islamic history, culture, and hospitality.

Bukhara

Often called the “Pillar of Islam,” is one of Uzbekistan’s most sacred and historic cities, with over 2,000 years of history and more than 140 protected monuments. A major stop on the Silk Road, it flourished as a center of Islamic learning, trade, and spirituality.

The city’s old quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage site, transports visitors back in time with its winding alleys, caravanserais, and bustling bazaars. Iconic landmarks include the Kalyan Minaret and Mosque, the Ark Fortress, the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, and numerous domed trading halls. Bukhara is also home to revered shrines and Sufi heritage sites, making it spiritually enriching as well as architecturally stunning. With its deep Islamic roots and warm hospitality, Bukhara is a living museum of faith and culture.

Khiva

A beautifully preserved Silk Road city in western Uzbekistan, is often described as an open-air museum. Its walled inner town, Itchan Kala, is a UNESCO World Heritage site showcasing centuries of Islamic architecture and culture. Walking through its gates feels like stepping back in time, with narrow alleys, clay-colored walls, and turquoise-tiled minarets dominating the skyline.

Highlights include the Kalta-Minor Minaret, famous for its unfinished yet striking design, the Juma Mosque with its 200 carved wooden pillars, the Kunya-Ark Fortress, and the ornate Tash Khauli Palace. Khiva also has madrassas, caravanserais, and shrines that reflect its role as both a spiritual and trading hub. Compact and atmospheric, Khiva offers an intimate journey into Uzbekistan’s Islamic heritage and timeless hospitality.

Tashkent

The vibrant capital of Uzbekistan, blends modern energy with deep Islamic heritage. As the country’s largest city, it offers wide boulevards, bustling bazaars, and a lively cultural scene alongside spiritual landmarks. The city’s heart of faith is the Khazrati Imam Complex, home to centuries-old mosques, madrasas, and the world’s oldest preserved Qur’an, the Uthman Qur’an.

Other highlights include the Chorsu Bazaar, where spices, dried fruits, and halal delicacies abound, and the Kukeldash Madrasa, one of Central Asia’s largest. Tashkent also features leafy parks, Soviet-era monuments, and modern museums. With numerous halal-friendly restaurants, mosques, and prayer facilities, Tashkent serves as both a welcoming entry point and a fascinating destination for Muslim travelers seeking history, spirituality, and contemporary comfort.

Shakhrisabz

Shakhrisabz, meaning “Green City,” is a historic gem in southern Uzbekistan and the birthplace of the great conqueror Timur (Tamerlane). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it was once a prominent center of culture and politics during the Timurid era. The city is renowned for the majestic ruins of the Ak-Saray Palace, Timur’s grand yet unfinished residence, whose towering entrance portal still inspires awe.

Other notable landmarks include the Dorus Saodat Complex, housing family mausoleums, and the Kok-Gumbaz Mosque, built by Timur’s grandson Ulugh Beg. Shakhrisabz is less crowded than Samarkand or Bukhara, offering a more tranquil experience. Surrounded by lush landscapes and mountains, it provides visitors with both historical depth and natural beauty, making it a rewarding stop on any Uzbekistan journey.
